Philosophy began over 2500 years ago when Socrates’ questions about the nature of the true, the good and the beautiful, rose above the din of the Greek Athenian marketplace. From ancient philosophers like Plato and Aristotle right up to present day thinkers across the globe, this ancient wisdom tradition has engaged people from all walks of life in solitary reflection and shared dialogue.

Philosophy may seem like an exercise in pure theory, but it’s crucially practical for us and for the organizations we work in. That’s because all of our thoughts and deeds, and the institutions within which we think and act, are shaped by our mental models. These are shared networks of ideas -- concepts, metaphors, beliefs, values and expectations.

Philosophy is the master key for unlocking, understanding and evaluating our ideas. It’s a way of understanding more deeply the various “boxes” we’re thinking and feeling in. But it’s also the ultimate art of thinking “outside of the box,” since no box can be deconstructed without philosophical attention.
